Kwame Nkrumah was born to Kofi Ngonloma, a goldsmith, and Elizabeth Nyaniba, a salesperson.
EDUCATION
His father worked in the area of Half Assini as a goldsmith where the young Francis attended elementary school.
Francis went to a teacher training school in Accra in his journey to becoming a teacher himself.
The budding communist was introduced to the idea in 1935 during his stint at the Lincoln University.
He begun his Freedom for Africa agenda in 1945 when he made a trip to London and put together q conference. Subsequently, he changed his name to Kwame Nkrumah.
SELF-GOVERNMENT IN THE SHORTEST POSSIBLE TIME
On his return to the Gold Coast he founded the Convention People’s Party after a fallout with the other leaders of the UGCC.
n 1951, the exuberant Kwame Nkrumah was in prison when elections were conducted. He won in a landslide victory. He was then released by Sir Charles Noble Arden-Clark the then Governor. Kwame Nkrumah was designated Prime Minister in March 1952.
FORWARD EVER BACKWARDS NEVER
When Ghana became independent from England, Nkrumah was its first president.
Midnight on March 5, 1957 when the Gold Coast became Ghana, Nkrumah declared:
‘We are going to see that we create our own African personality and identity. We again rededicate ourselves in the struggle to emancipate other countries in Africa; for our independence is meaningless unless it is linked up with the total liberation of the African continent!’
Education was free and compulsory while more women were encouraged to take up heavier roles.
The Akosombo Dam- a hydroelectric dam was constructed under his rule as well as a nuclear power plant.
EXILE & DEATH
February 24, 1996, the military and police staged a coup. After his overthrow, he lived out his estranged life in Conakry, Guinea with allies while his family fled to Egypt.
He was diagnosed with prostate cancer, in August 1971 and later flew to Romania for treatment.
He died in Bucharest, Romania, on 27 April 1972 at the age of 62. He was later interred at Nkroful.
