On May 5th, an inmate arrived at the Ankaful Maximum Security Prison, in the Central Region where he was to serve a 30-year jail term. The inmate tested positive for COVID-19 some five days later.
Seven officers who came into contact with the inmate at the maximum security prison have been placed in isolation.
As stated by JoyNews, the Ankaful prison, on Monday, May 18, 2020, intends to begin mass testing of all their prison officers and inmates. Visitors have been directed not to make their way to prisons since Ghana recorded its first case earlier on in March.

As the country’s cases began rising rapidly, there were calls from the public and other authorities for the prisons to be decongested in order to slow the spread of the disease who live in unfavourable conditions.
