The 2019 Africa Cup of Nations winners, Algeria together with runners-up Senegal and 3rd placed Nigeria are yet to receive their cash prize by CAF.
Algeria, who won the competition are expected to be payed a staggering $4.5m while second place Senegal and 3rd place Nigeria were expected to go home with $2.5m and $2m respectively.
A statement from CAF’s Executive Committee meeting in Cairo on Tuesday, September 10 revealed that the African football governing body, CAF does not have enough funds.
“It appears, from the analysis of the Finance Committee, that CAF has entered a cycle of structural deficit that will reach about six $6m at the end of this year if it is not reversed immediately,” CAF’s Finance Committee chairman, Fouzi Lekjaa was quoted as saying.
“There is a need to reverse this deficit trend by rationalising spending and making use of better revenue potential for CAF.”
It was reported days ago by Brila FM that the Nigeria Football Federation only received $600,000 from CAF in August, from their actual sum for finishing third in the competition. Winners of the tournament, Desert Foxes of Algeria, 2nd place Senegal, and fourth-placed Carthage Eagles of Tunisia are also yet to receive the full payment.
