League football in the top five (5) European countries are all but ended with the exception of Serie A with two games left to go.
It is however clear and known who the winner is after Juventus beat Sampdoria on Sunday to clinch their 9th consecutive Serie A title under new manager Maurizio Sarri.
We bring all the stats of the champions in the top flight leagues in Europe and their route to victory in the respective leagues.
1. Paris Saint-Germain – Ligue 1 champions
We kick off in France where PSG under German manager Thomas Tuchel won their 3rd consecutive Ligue 1 title.
After football was halted in February due to the global pandemic, France’s Ligue de Football Professionnel announced Paris Saint-Germain as the 2019-20 Ligue 1 champions after the remainder of the season was cancelled because of COVID-19.
PSG played 27 games where they scored a staggering 75 goals and conceded 24 goals which brought them to a goal difference of 51. The Ligue 1 champions accumulated 68 points after winning 22 of their 27 games played with 2 draws and 2 losses.
Attacker Kylian Mbappe edged Monaco striker, Wissam Ben Yedder to win the Golden Boot after finding the net 18 times this season.
2. Bayern Munchen – Bundesliga
The most dominant club in German football, Bayern Munchen won their 8th consecutive title with Polish goal machine, Robert Lewandoski winning a third straight Golden Boot award after scoring 34 goals in the league.
The Bavarians scored 100 goals in the league conceding 32 in the process which gave them a goal difference of 68. After the 34-game campaign, they managed to win 26 games with 4 draws and 4 losses. After the league resumed in May after a halt due to COVID-19, Bayern won all nine (9) remaining fixtures scoring an amazing 27 goals.
Borussia Dortmund ensured they gave Bayern a run for their money with a fight for the title until both sides met at the Signal Iduna Park where Bayern beat the hosts to steer clear of the title race.
3. Juventus – Serie A
Strikes from Cristiano Ronaldo and Federico Bernadeschi against Sampdoria secured Juventus their 9th consecutive Serie A title and their 36th top flight triumph.
The Biaconeri with two games to spare have played 36 games so far this season, winning 26, drawing 5 games and losing 5 as well.
With Inter Milan breathing down their necks from the start of the league, star man Ronaldo had other ideas as he scored 31 goals for Juve which forms about 40% of the entire team goal tally of 75 this season.
With two games left to end the season, Ronaldo however will have to battle it out with red-hot SS Lazio striker, Ciro Immobile who has scored a staggering 34 goals this season.
The race for the Capocannoniere is on as both strikers will fight for the top scorer award till the last day.
4. Real Madrid – La Liga
It’s been 3 seasons since the Los Blancos last won the La Liga title and they did so with the return of Zinedine Zidane as manager. Zidane who was in charge of affairs at the club between 2016 and 2018 won three successive Uefa Champions league trophies returned and finally delivered the La Liga title that was missing during his first stint at the club.
The star studded side lost just 3 games the entire season, winning 26 out of 38 games played and drawing 9 in the process.
The team produced 70 goals and conceded 25 which won their Belgian goalkeeper, Thibaut Courtois the Ricardo Zamora award as the keeper with the most clean sheets during the season.
5. Liverpool – Premier League
Liverpool FC won the Premier League this season; their first top flight league win in 30 years and their very first since the inception of the English Premier League in 1992.
Setting a new record, the Liverpool side under Jurgen Klopp won the title with an incredible seven (7) games to spare.
They also matched Manchester City’s record for most wins (32) in a single Premier League season after signing off on 2019-20 with victory over Newcastle United on final matchday.
The Reds lost 3 games and drew 3 in the entire campaign scoring 85 goals and conceding 33 which took them to a goal difference tally of 52.
