Church set on fire over missing child

Protesters in south-west Nigeria have set ablaze a church in Akure city, this was following unconfirmed rumours that the body of a one-year-old child who had been missing was found buried by the altar of the church.

Witness accounts state that, two of the protesters were shot and wounded by police officers who were there to disperse the angry and violent crowd.

The Nigerian Police in a statement said one of their officers was also killed.

CHILD’S DISAPPEARANCE

While attending the Sotitobire Miracle Church, last month with his mother, the child went missing.

The precise circumstances of the child’s disappearance are hazy, but his mother, Modupe Kolawole, told BBC journalists she suspected foul play.

Alfa Babatunde, the founder of the church, was arrested last week by the Nigerian Secret Police Force in connection with the boy’s mysterious disappearance. He has not yet made a public statement.

BBC Yoruba’s Temitope Adedeji reports from the scene that it has not yet been confirmed that the boy’s body has been found.
