Two days ago, the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) called on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to instantly suspend the mass registration exercise which was ongoing in parts of the Eastern Region
In a statement released by the GMA, they indicated that in the “interest of Public Health and Safety, the GMA calls on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to suspend with immediate effect the ongoing mass registration exercise in the Eastern region.”
The GMA reasons that continuing the registration exercise goes against direct orders from the President as preventative measures to fight the spread of the highly infectious virus.
Even though the NIA gave a directive to all of its Supervising Registration Officers (SROs) to allow only twenty-five (25) persons including its officials at a registration center in a given time reports indicate that the directive is not being followed.
Ghana has so far recorded 9 confirmed cases of the virus. The increase in the cases has pushed many Ghanaians to push for the end of the registration exercise.
