How To Promote Hair Growth

A common complaint among women of color revolves around their hair. Some women feel others are blessed to have ‘good hair’ while they are left to wallow with their stubborn hair. What is good hair? In the black community, it seems like good hair can only be found on people of mixed race or those who have very loose curls.

“The major question is, why doesn’t my hair grow?”

Feeling like your hair is refusing to grow is very common. The truth is unless you face a medical condition like aloepecia, your wonderful strands are always growing. I have come to realise that, those with this worry are mostly talking about length retention. In many cases, the length of your does not seem to improve because as your hair is growing out of your scalp, the ends are breaking of at the same rate.

Here are some reasons why your hair may not seem to be growing.
1. Lack of Moisture
The thick kinky nature of our hair means it requires a lot more care and moisture. Ironically, the nature of our strands make it very difficult for our natural oils on our scalp to easily reach the ends and without it, breakage becomes very possible.

TIPS: On wash day, apply a layer of leave-in conditioner like the Eya Naturals Leave-In Lotion to damp hair. Work into ends of hair and seal in the moisture with the Eya Naturals Almond Oil. Remember that results are not instant and may take time so be patient with your locks.

2. Using Too Much Heat
Natural hair is touted as strong and full of character. Despite this belief, too much heat can actually ruin your hair. Too much heat (too often) can result in extra dry and brittle hair.

TIP: Make sure hair is well moisturized and well coated with a layer of protection like the Tresseme Saloon Sleek Spray for days when you want to straighten your hair.

3. There is always something in your hair
Over-manipulation of your hair can cause it to break. The fragile ends are put under stress when they are manipulated with whether it’s with your hands or combs and brushes.

TIP: Try wearing protective styles if you are always touching your hair. Less touch = less breakage.

4. Genetics
Everyone has a different kind of hair growth cycle. In everey cycle there is a growth stage. So it may just be that your growth stage is shorter than others. When this happens, it may seem like your hair does not grow at all.  As long as you use our tips, your hair will be in the best shape it can be.

5. Health Issues

What if you are actually applying all the tips above but your hair still doesn’t grow, there could be an underlying  health issue. A vitamin deficiency may be causing your hairs stunted growth.

Kindly seek professional help just to be sure. Take a look at your current regimen and compare it with these hair care tips. What can you do better to retain length?
