Many prominent US figures were targeted by hackers on Twitter in a now discovered Bitcoin scam. Billionaires Elon Musk, Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates had their accounts hacked by the fraudsters.
The official accounts of President Barack Obama, presidential aspirant Joe Biden and rapper Kanye West also requested donations in the cryptocurrency scam.
A tweet from Mr Bill Gates’ account said.”Everyone is asking me to give back…You send $1,000, I send you back $2,000.” It is very surprising how the hackers thought anyone would fall for such a claim from an account of a billionaire.
According to Twitter correspondents,it was a “co-ordinated” attack which targeted its employees that had “access to internal systems and tools”.
In a series of tweets, the company said they knew that the hackers had used this “access to take control of many highly-visible (including verified) accounts and Tweet on their behalf”.
It also added that “significant steps” were taken to limit access to such internal systems and tools while the company’s investigation was ongoing.
Meanwhile, Twitter chief executive Jack Dorsey tweeted: “Tough day for us at Twitter. We all feel terrible this happened.”
