The information minister, Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah, made mention of the Office of the President’s written a letter to the national media commission to issue the ban.
When surfing television channels in the middle of the night, it is almost impossible to find a channel that is not hosting a (mostly self-proclaimed) priest or Mallam.
With a flick of the wrist and a couple of incantations, the priests and Mallams conjure bags or stacks of cash. Some also claim to have the ability to cure a host of diseases.
Others advertise their expertise in providing their customers (scammers) with charms which are assured to convince their unsuspecting victims to send over their lives earnings.
Interestingly Prophets, seers and pastors are exempt from this ban even though they offer similar services such as consultations, do-as-I-say charms and Holy oils and water. It seems that for every priest or Mallam on television, there are 3 prophets.
Netizens speculate that the ban is to prevent the spread of ignorance and superstition and should also affect televangelists.
