Police give reasons for use of force against law students

The Ghana Police Service has given some reasons as to why they used “reasonable force” to disperse protesting law students on Monday, October 7.

The Ghana Police Service claims the students failed to heed the public order law which requires potential demonstrators to provide the police with a notice at least five days to the planned date.

The Public Affairs Directorate in a statement issued on Monday (and signed by the Public Affairs Directorate) said the students who tried  to move towards the Jubilee House, sat in the middle of the road and “pelted the police with stones and offensive weapons” once they got to the King Tackie Tawiah Overpass.

For this reason, they felt it was appropriate to  spray hot water and fired rubber bullets to disperse the protestors.

It added that the 13 students who were arrested in the process have been released.
