The Education Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh, has addressed the current struggles of parents and their wards in regards to the computerized SHS placement. A total of 122,706 qualified candidates without placement, now have the chance to do self-placement.
Dr. Prempeh advised candidates and their guardians to access the self-placement platform on the Computerised School Selections Placement System (CSSPS) website; cssps.gov.gh. The platform provides the user with the option to choose from available schools and the residential status the user prefers.
According to the Minister, the hitches which came with Computerized Placement System of this year were not as worrying as previous years. He also stated that more than 75% of all candidates have been assigned a placement.
Cassandra Twum (Head of the Public Relations Unit of the Ghana Education Service (GES) explained to the Daily Graphic that there were vacancies to be occupied by all the candidates.
Out of 490,000 expected placements, only 473,728 had a placement.
Ms Ampofo shed more light on the differences. Even though some of the candidates scored good grades in other subjects, they scored a baffling grade nine in either Mathematics or English Language which are core subjects. Candidates facing such situations will have to rewrite those subjects before they can receive placements next year. the candidates will have their papers sponsored next year.
Breakdown of placement
83,053 of the candidates were placed in the single-track schools, 138,053 were placed in the Green Track and 129,916 of them were placed in the Gold Track system.

During the month of June, The Municipal Chief Executive for Obuasi, Elijah Adansi-Bonah encouraged the students who were writing the 2019 BECE papers to “work hard, pass and enjoy free SHS”. It seems after heeding the advice of the MCE, some of the students now have to go through another process to gain access to the President’s Free SHS policy.
