The Precious Talent Top School in Nairobi collapsed in the early hours of the day. It is reported that at least seven children have died after the primary school building collapsed in Dagoretti.
Dozens of those who were injured have been taken to hospital in the city. Emergency and rescue services are at the scene.
Large crowds that have gathered nearby have made it difficult for rescuers to get to work.
Moses Ndirang the school’s director, blamed the collapse on the construction of a nearby sewer pipe. He says the construction of the sewer pipe may have weakened the foundations of the building.
The incident happened shortly before 04:00am (GMT). Dozens of children were quickly rushed away from the scene.
The Kenya Red Cross transferred some of the children to the Kenyatta National Hospital.
Local politician John Kiarie told the NTV Kenya television channel that first floor of the building collapsed and trapped the children below.
The BBC’s Ferdinand Omondi reports that the angry locals have complained about the slow emergency response of the emergency crew.
Social media images residents gathered around the site as rescuers search through the rubble.
The authorities have opened an investigation into the cause of the accident.
