In mid 2018, MyNewsGh published articles about some revered University Lecturers who had made it their business to have sex or receive sexual favours with female students in order to resurrect their failing grades.
Once again Ghana’s Premier University, University of Ghana (Legon) is caught up in a sex for grades scandal in a documentary by the BBC.
BBC AFRICA EYE INVESTIGATES.
The investigations were conducted by BBC Africa Eye. The documentary covered the illicit actions namely sexual harrassment of the students at the hands of Ghanaian lecturers and other lecturers in highly rated West African Universities.
The BBC sent undercover journalists who posed as students to the University Of Ghana. This was after they had gathered various testimonies of the open secret.
Ghana’s sister nation-Nigeria was also involved. The University of Lagos was investigated.
The pseudo-students faced sexual harrassment, undue pressure to perform sexual acts and were also propositioned by the lecturers.
The documentary is spearheaded by reporter Kiki Mordi.
GUEST HOUSES THAT “KNOW WHAT TO DO”
Like an eagle, the lecturers including those who unfortunately did not make it on tape set their eyes on the female students who are already being sexually harrassed by other students in the educational system.
Instead of third parties to report these lecturers, they rather accepted the monies of these men.
It therefore came as a surprise to know there were guest houses and hotels where owners knew the rundown when a call came through from their big bosses-the lecturers.
The students never arrive with them , lest their good name be sullied. Other lecturers who are resident on campus invite the girls to their homes when no one is around.
NO SEX, NO GRADUATION
One thing students look forward to is Graduation Day. On that day, some families are expected to arrive in multiple buses to celebrate with the graduate.
Unfortunately some students are filled with dread because, their grades are preventing them from graduating. Long before I entered the University, I had heard of lecturers who required you to sleep with them before giving you the grade you deserve after consistently failing you. On other occasions, the grades fail to appear but miraculously find their way back the moment the lecturers get a feel of the honeypot.
SOCIAL MEDIA REACTS
Once the trailer made it’s way to social media, opinions have been divided. Some users blame the students for not learning while others who are in the know refuse to “name names”.
Here are threads to follow on Twitter.
