New Zealand student has been found dead in a university hall.
The body of a student at the University of Canterbury, New Zealand has been found two months after his death.
The victim’s (a first-year student who has not been named) remains were discovered at the university after other students noticed a foul smell coming from his room.
According to local media reports, help from the police’s Disaster Victim Identification unit was needed to identify him due to the length of time the body was in the room.
The cause of death is unclear but is being examined by a coroner.
Vice-Chancellor Cheryl de la Rey said, “Despite the comprehensive pastoral care programmes in place, for us it is inconceivable to imagine how these circumstances could have occurred,” in a statement.
New Zealand’s Education Minister Chris Hipkins said he “expects the university to conduct a thorough investigation”.
